Craigslist.org is the world’s biggest American online classified ads website and community. It is a community-driven e-commerce hub. The site is specially  for posting personal notices for jobs, housing, items for sale, services, community happenings and events, and even personals. Craigslist.org  has sections dedicated to jobs, housing, personals, for sale, items wanted by buyers, services, community, gigs, résumés, and discussion forums.

Craigslist.org

“Craig’s List” was the former name before it was changed to craigslist. It was initiated by a computer programmer based in San Francisco Bay Area, Craig Newmark. Craig started in 1995 by emailing a list of local events and notices to his friends. Craig’s list grew so big and popular in 1996. This prompted him to move his services to the internet. As of 1999 Craig expanded his network to 9 U.S cities operated by nine employees. Most of the early postings by Craig were notices of social events of interest, software and Internet developers who were living in the San Francisco Bay Area.zz

With millions of daily posts, just monitoring for inappropriate and sketchy content could be laborious for Craigslist employees. As a result, the company instituted an ingenious flagging system that basically allows community users to be the first line of defense against bad content. The flagging system allows users to quickly identify illegal and inappropriate postings. Users may flag postings they perceive to violate Craigslist guidelines. Flagging does not involve account login or registration and can be done anonymously by any user. Postings on the site are automatically removed when a certain number of users flag them.

Corporate Affairs

In January 2000, Jim Buckmaster joined Craigslist. He worked as lead programmer and Chief Technology Officer. Buckmaster made great contributions and was elevated to CEO by November same year. He introduced the multi-city architecture, search engine, discussion forums, and flagging system to the site.
